Renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, creator of 'Statue of Unity,' dies at 100
Ram Sutar, the legendary artist behind the world's tallest statue—the Statue of Unity—passed away late on Wednesday at his Noida home.
He was 100 and died from age-related issues.
His son Anil Sutar said in a note shared with the press, "It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of my father Shri Ram Vanji Sutar on 17th December midnight at our residence."
Who was he?
Born in Maharashtra in 1925, Sutar graduated top of his class from JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai.
He started out restoring ancient sculptures at Ellora and Ajanta Caves before launching his own art studio in Noida.
Over seven decades, he created more than 50 major works—including Parliament's iconic Mahatma Gandhi statue and Gandhi busts seen in over 450 cities worldwide.
His most famous work, the Statue of Unity, honors India's first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
