SC pauses exhumation of tribal Christians in Chhattisgarh
India
The Supreme Court has paused the exhumation of tribal Christian bodies in Chhattisgarh, after families said they were being stopped from burying loved ones in their own village graveyards.
The court wants the state government to explain itself, as there are concerns about basic rights being violated.
Local group says forced reburials break right to dignity
A local group says these forced reburials break the right to dignity (Article 21) and religious freedom (Article 25).
Advocate Colin Gonsalves shared that some exhumations happened without family consent, which feels deeply unfair.
The court has now banned any more exhumations for now, issued notice to the state and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.
A follow-up hearing is set for next month.
