SP Rohtak removed after being named in IPS officer suicide
What's the story
Narendra Bijarniya, a senior Haryana cop and Superintendent of Police in Rohtak, has been removed from his position after he was named in the case related to the alleged suicide of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Y Puran Kumar. Bijarniya has not been given a new post yet. The 52-year-old Kumar allegedly took his own life on October 7 at his home in Chandigarh's Sector 11. A firearm was recovered from the scene of the incident.
Allegations detailed
Suicide note accused senior officers of mental harassment
Kumar's suicide note, which was eight pages long and typed, accused several senior officers of mental harassment, caste-based discrimination, and public humiliation. It said he had been facing "continued blatant caste-based discrimination" and "targeted mental harassment" since August 2020. News18 also reported sources saying that the note mentioned the fabrication of anonymous complaints against him by some senior officers to tarnish his reputation.
Family's response
Kumar's wife demands FIR against DGP
Kumar's wife, Amneet Puran Kumar, a senior Indian Administrative Services officer, alleged her husband's death was due to "systematic persecution" by senior officers who misused their authority. She called for an FIR against Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur and another senior IPS officer under the abetment to suicide provisions and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. She also reportedly refused permission for a post-mortem until action was taken against those named in her complaint.
Legal action
FIR filed against 13 officers, case handed to Chandigarh Police
An FIR has been registered against 13 officers, including Bijarniya, under Section 108 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3(1)(r) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The case is currently under investigation by Chandigarh Police. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by IG Pushpendra Kumar, has been formed to probe the matter.
