Strait of Hormuz crisis could lead to gas rationing in India
India's natural gas supply is facing a big headache as tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for bringing in liquefied natural gas, or LNG, from West Asia.
In 2024, India imported nearly $15 billion worth of LNG, with almost 60% coming from this region.
If disruptions drag on, India might have to ration gas supplies
Most of India's LNG comes from just a handful of countries (Qatar leads the pack, followed by the US and UAE), so any trouble in Hormuz hits hard.
If ships have to avoid this route for safety and go around Africa instead, delivery times could double and costs would spike.
If these disruptions drag on, India might even have to ration its gas supplies. For a country so dependent on imported energy, that's a real worry, especially with global tensions showing no signs of cooling off.
