Supreme Court faults West Bengal over Malda gherao trapping officers
India
The Supreme Court was not happy with how West Bengal handled a recent gherao in Malda.
The chief justice pointed out that local officials only acted after the court gave them strict orders late at night.
Seven judicial officers, including three women and one officer with a five-year-old child, were stuck inside a government office for hours before police finally stepped in.

This all started on April 1, when protesters surrounded the officers at the Kaliachak II Block Development Office.
The officers were there to help update voter rolls ahead of the state elections coming up on April 23 and 29.
The standoff dragged on for almost eight hours, with police rescuing everyone after things got tense outside.
