Supreme Court pauses ruling on Tarun Tejpal surrender exemption post-conviction
The Supreme Court has paused its decision on whether Tarun Tejpal, ex-editor of Tehelka, is seeking exemption from surrender. This follows his conviction for rape in a 2013 case.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Bombay High Court earlier this month.
The court says it will decide after hearing both sides.
Goa contests Tejpal plea, seeks life
Goa's legal team argued that Tejpal's request isn't valid since he hasn't surrendered or officially asked for exemption as required. They stressed how serious the case is and want rules strictly followed.
Meanwhile, Tejpal's lawyer pointed out he has until early September to surrender and asked for the appeal to be heard soon, along with interim protection.
The Goa government also wants his sentence bumped up from 10 years to life imprisonment.
