Supreme Court refuses stay on CBSE 3-language rule from 2026-27
The Supreme Court isn't stopping the rollout of CBSE's new three-language rule for Class nine students, set to kick in from the 2026-27 school year.
The bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V Mohana summed it up simply: "There is no question of interim protection," the bench said.
So, for now, the policy stays.
Three-language rule requires 2 Indian languages
An NGO challenged how quickly this policy is being pushed through, but the next hearing isn't until July 14.
CBSE was expected to issue detailed implementation guidelines by June 15.
Here's what you need to know: Class nine students will study three languages (two must be Indian) and the third won't have a board exam, just internal assessment.
Schools need to update their language options by June 30, and CBSE will help out with textbooks in 19 languages, plus virtual classes, and teacher sharing.
