What's the story

United States President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed a peace deal to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The signing ceremony took place during dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following a G7 summit. "This was not easy—that I can tell you," Trump said before signing, which was met with applause from attendees, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Pezeshkian signed the MoU remotely.

After he emerged from the palace, Trump told reporters, "Just signed it." The 14-point agreement calls for an immediate end to hostilities and a final accord within 60 days. It also mandates the lifting of the US naval blockade and guarantees safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Further, it promises phased sanctions relief, unfreezing Iranian assets, and a $300 billion economic development program for Iran.

The memorandum also mentions Iran's commitment to not pursue nuclear weapons. Future discussions on enriched uranium stockpiles will be under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Iranian Embassy in India also shared pictures of Pezeshkian holding the signed peace deal.

Diplomatic stance

What Iran's chief negotiator said

Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said they are negotiating from a "position of strength." "The difference between the current negotiations and previous periods is that today, this banner of battlefield victory, which both enemies and friends have acknowledged, serves as the backing for negotiations. Every war that ends in victory, if it does not ultimately lead to a legal and political document and those victories are not recorded, will bring no benefit," he added.

Regional response

Pakistan welcomes peace deal, praises Trump

French President Macron hailed the deal as an "important step" toward lasting peace and lower energy prices. Pakistan, which had mediated in the conflict, also welcomed the peace deal. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said it shows both sides' commitment to diplomacy. "Islamabad MoU shall enter into force with immediate effect and as first step, the Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade," he said.
