Supreme Court reviews BAI plea amid BCI chairperson 35-40% estimate
The Supreme Court is stepping in after the Bar Association of India (BAI) asked for a national digital register of lawyers.
Turns out, the Bar Council of India (BCI) chairperson believes up to 35-40% of practicing advocates might not actually have valid law degrees.
BAI says regular checks aren't cutting it and wants a permanent, tech-based solution to help keep the profession legitimate and safeguard judicial independence.
CJI Surya Kant calls proposal innovative
Chief Justice Surya Kant called the proposal "innovative," but noted universities would need to share data about law grads for it to work.
The court has asked government bodies and bar councils for their input.
CJI Surya Kant also raised concerns about some lawyers posting negative comments about judges online, hinting these could be fake entries, and recommended new guidelines for lawyers' social media conduct, plus more support and training for young advocates.
