Tamil Nadu withdraws circulars to monitor leftist students after criticism
India
The Tamil Nadu government is catching heat after issuing two circulars asking colleges and officials to keep tabs on students and political groups linked to protests, especially those with left-leaning views.
After widespread criticism from various outfits and political leaders, both circulars were quickly withdrawn.
Ministers deny approval, CPI(M) demands accountability
State ministers said the orders were made without their approval. One official has even been transferred over it.
Still, CPI(M) leaders are calling for more accountability, and protests across Tamil Nadu are keeping the spotlight on concerns about student rights and government surveillance.
