Tirupati temple scam: Silk dupattas turn out to be polyester, ₹54cr gone
India
Turns out, the famous Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) has been scammed for years—silk dupattas procured by the temple trust were actually polyester, not the promised silk blend.
This switch-up cost the temple trust over ₹54 crore between 2015 and 2025.
What went wrong—and what's next
A contractor supplied about 15,000 of these fake "silk" dupattas at ₹1,389 each. Lab tests—including one by the Central Silk Board—confirmed they weren't silk at all.
TTD Chairman BR Naidu flagged problems in how things were bought and handed the case to the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
This isn't TTD's first controversy lately; there have also been issues with adulterated ghee in prasadam and theft from donation boxes, raising big questions about temple management.
