Delhi building collapse: 7th body recovered
What's the story
The death toll in the Chawri Bazar building collapse has risen to seven, after a body was recovered on Sunday. According to The Hindu, the deceased was identified as Luchhuman Mukhiya, a 66-year-old resident of Village Jakauli in Bihar's Darbhanga district. His remains were taken to Dr. Lalit Narayan Mishra Memorial (LNJP) Hospital for further proceedings.
Ongoing efforts
Rescue operation underway
The rescue operation at the site is still on, with fears that more workers might be trapped under the debris.
The two injured persons rescued on Thursday are stable and undergoing treatment.
The three-storey building collapsed on Thursday morning while its third-floor roof slab was being laid.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the pillars may have failed to bear the load.
Construction issues
Building was being constructed for 6 months
The unauthorized building was located in Gali Sheesh Mahal in the congested Chawri Bazar market.
Around 15 construction workers were present at the site when it collapsed.
The structure was being built on a plot of about 70 square yards for around six months without authorization.
Rescue operations have been hampered by narrow lanes and space constraints, preventing heavy machinery from accessing the site.
Rescue teams
NDRF, MCD, and DFS teams involved in rescue operation
A team of 38 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, 30 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) laborers, 10-12 Delhi Fire Service (DFS) personnel, and 15-20 civil defense volunteers are involved in the operation.
The incident has raised concerns over unauthorized construction at the site.
Five months before the collapse, police flagged this construction to MCD authorities.
Legal action
Four people arrested after incident
After the incident, MCD suspended a junior engineer and an assistant engineer from its Building Department for dereliction of duty.
The Delhi Police have arrested the building owner Samiullah alias Ayub and three contractors, Siraj, Tajuddin, and Furkan, in connection with the collapse.
They have been booked under Sections 105, 290, 125(a) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation into this case is underway.
