Tukaram Mundhe's 3,000+ Mumbai raids since May shut major chains
Since May, Maharashtra's Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has been on a mission to clean up Mumbai's food scene.
He's carried out more than 3,000 raids, shutting down several big-name outlets such as Domino's and Pizza Hut, and McDonald's for things such as pests and spoiled food.
Even local street vendors have had to step up their hygiene game as rules get stricter.
Mundhe wins praise, department fined ₹5L
Mundhe's tough approach has won many supporters from people worried about food safety, but some businesses are struggling to keep up with the new standards.
There have been legal challenges too: a court recently fined his department ₹500,000 for continued suspension of an eatery even though it improved its compliance.
Still, Mundhe stands firm: "You are dealing with the lives of people."
His efforts have won widespread public admiration across India because he has tapped into deep public frustration, including one fan who told him Prime Minister Narendra Modi should give him a national role.
