UIDAI seeks deceased voter data from ECI to remove Aadhaar
UIDAI is asking the Election Commission of India (ECI) for details on voters who have passed away, after separate SIR findings in Bihar and West Bengal identified deceased names still on the electoral rolls.
The goal? To remove these people's Aadhaar numbers from the system and keep things accurate.
Right now, ECI has not yet taken a decision on the request, and officials say the data cannot be shared with external entities.
Over 20 million Aadhaar numbers deactivated
UIDAI has already deactivated over 20 million Aadhaar numbers using data from government sources, promising these will not be reused.
In West Bengal alone, 3.4 million Aadhaar holders were marked as deceased since 2009.
To make its database even more reliable, UIDAI is exploring collaborations with financial institutions.
