Uranium found in Delhi's groundwater: What you need to know

India

About 13-15% of groundwater samples in Delhi have uranium levels higher than what's considered safe, according to the Central Ground Water Board's latest report.
Out of 83 samples tested, 24 crossed the safety limit—raising concerns since Delhi depends on groundwater for much of its daily water needs.

Northwest India is a contamination hotspot

It's not just Delhi—states like Punjab, Haryana, and to a lesser extent, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, are also seeing elevated uranium levels in their groundwater.
Punjab had it worst, with over 60% of samples affected after monsoon season.
The report also flagged excess nitrate and fluoride in several areas, which can be risky for health.

Why this matters

Delhi recorded the highest amount of residual sodium carbonate too, which isn't great news for soil or crops.
Experts link many of these groundwater quality issues to overusing and depleting underground water sources.
The takeaway? Regular checks and local action are needed fast to keep drinking water safe and protect public health.
