West Bengal: DVC releases water from dams, CM Mamata fuming

India

The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has released over 70,000 cubic feet per second of water from Maithon and Panchet reservoirs as of September 3, 2025, following heavy rainfall that's left rivers in southern West Bengal swollen and approaching/above danger levels.

North Bengal also struggling with landslides, heavy rain

Flood warnings are now out for Hooghly, East Burdwan, and Ghatal subdivision in West Midnapore as rivers there are inching close to the danger-mark.
State officials are stepping up monitoring to keep things under control.
The West Bengal government isn't happy with DVC's move—Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the releases "reckless," saying they put millions at risk during festival season.
Meanwhile, North Bengal is also struggling with landslides and heavy rain.
