Why Mumbai Metro Line 3 has no mobile network

India

Mumbai's brand-new Metro Line 3, which opened in October 2025, is already frustrating over 1.5 lakh daily commuters—there's barely any mobile network in the underground stretch.
The blackout isn't about missing tech, but a money dispute between the Metro authority (MMRCL), their network provider ACES India, and telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.
They can't agree on how much it should cost for operators to use the shared infrastructure.

What's the reason for the blackout?

Here's the catch: MMRCL got ACES India to build a neutral network that all operators could use. But Jio called the fees too high and wanted to set up its own system, while Airtel pulled out after briefly joining.
Vodafone Idea and BSNL are slowly rolling out coverage, but big gaps remain—so calls, texts, and even digital ticketing often just don't work underground.

Free Wi-Fi available at all stations

To help out, Metro authorities have launched free Wi-Fi at all Line 3 stations.
It's a handy workaround for booking tickets on the MetroConnect3 app or sending quick messages—but until telecom companies settle their differences, full mobile signal inside Mumbai's newest metro line is still on hold.
