Rotation

Wrist rotations are an easy and beneficial warm-up exercise. Extend your arms straight out in front of you. Slowly rotate your wrists in a circular motion, first clockwise for approximately 30 seconds, then counter-clockwise for an additional 30 seconds. This movement aids in lubricating the wrist joints, enhancing flexibility which is key for quicker snare drum rolls.

Stretching

Stretching the flexors and extensors

To greatly improve wrist flexibility, stretch the flexor and extensor muscles of the forearm. Extend one arm out in front of you with the palm facing down. Use your other hand to gently pull back on the fingers until you feel a stretch on the underside of your forearm. Hold for 15-20 seconds, then switch arms. Repeat with the palm facing up to stretch the extensors.

Simply squeeze a stress ball or grip strengthener tightly with each hand for five seconds and then slowly release it; do this 10 times per session per hand. Gradually, you will build muscle endurance, enabling you to sustain faster tempos during longer performances.
