Special discussion on 'Vande Mataram' in Parliament this week
What's the story
The Parliament will hold a special discussion on 150 years of "Vande Mataram" later this week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the debate. The Lok Sabha has allocated 10 hours for what the government calls a major celebration of India's national song. The discussion is expected to take place on Thursday or Friday, amid a contentious Winter Session which began on Monday.
Political divide
Opposition divided over 'Vande Mataram' discussion
The opposition is divided over the proposed discussion on "Vande Mataram." The Congress party has opposed the debate, questioning its timing and accusing the government of distracting from electoral reforms. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has supported it. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee questioned why slogans like "Vande Mataram" can't be raised in Parliament if they are important to national identity.

'You are disrespecting our land'
"Kyun nahi bolenge? Jai Hind aur Vande Mataram hamara national song hai. Yeh hamara azaadi ka slogan hai. Jai Hind hamara Netaji ka naara hai... Isse jo takraega choor choor ho jaega", she said. "If we cannot say Jai Hind and Vande Mataram and if they disrespect Raja Rammohan Roy, is this acceptable? You are disrespecting our land! A leader understands and respects people," she claimed.

Government defends discussion, opposition accuses of hypocrisy
This proposed debate comes after a parliamentary bulletin reiterated rules against raising slogans like "Thanks," "Jai Hind," and "Vande Mataram" during proceedings. This guideline was part of a new "Handbook for Members of Rajya Sabha" provided to members to raise awareness of parliamentary customs and etiquette. The bulletin stated that raising slogans and raising banners is against House rules and proper conduct.
