What's the story

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to incite Hindu-Muslim riots. The allegation was made on Saturday, December 20, 2025, by BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia at a press conference in New Delhi, PTI reported. He claimed that Banerjee is indulging in communal politics as she senses a possible defeat of her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in the upcoming state assembly polls next year.

Controversial comments

BJP accuses Banerjee of silence on controversial remarks

Bhatia also questioned Banerjee's silence over TMC MLA Madan Mitra's alleged remarks about Lord Ram. He said, "TMC MLA Madan Mitra said Prabhu Ram is Muslim, not a Hindu. Crores of Hindus have been hurt with his remarks, but Mamata Banerjee has kept mum over it." "Did she expel Madan Mitra from her party? Was any FIR lodged against him?" he asked.

Political accusations

BJP accuses Banerjee of appeasement politics

Bhatia said it was Banerjee's responsibility to ensure maintenance of law and order in the state, as the state home department comes under her. The BJP spokesperson also cited past incidents where he alleged Banerjee showed disrespect toward Hindu beliefs. "When someone greeted her with 'Jai Sri Ram' in 2019, she furiously came out of her car and told him, 'I will skin you alive,'" Bhatia alleged, adding, "We also saw how she called 'Maha Kumbh' a 'Mrityu Kumbh."

Respect questioned

BJP questions Banerjee's respect for Hindu beliefs

Bhatia also questioned why Banerjee and her party leaders don't respect Hindu beliefs. He asked if they dared to make similar statements against other religions. "Mamata Banerjee considers Hindus second-grade citizens," Bhatia alleged, predicting a strong response to the TMC from voters in the upcoming assembly polls. Elections to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly are expected to be held in either March or April 2026 for the 294 constituencies.
