Motilal Nehru: News

Motilal Nehru was a lawyer, Indian National Congress (INC) leader, and freedom fighter. He was the father of independent India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. He went to Kanpur’s Government High School and obtained a law degree from Muir Central College in Allahabad. Nehru started practicing as a lawyer in his 20s and joined his brother’s flourishing legal practice. He was an advocate at the Allahabad High Court, and his legal practice had gradually made him affluent. In his 40s, Nehru entered politics and belonged to the Moderate section of INC as opposed to the Radicals. Motilal became the President of INC twice, once in 1919 (Amritsar) and in 1928 (Calcutta). In response to the Simon Commission in 1928, Nehru prepared his famous Nehru Report, the draft constitution meant for a free India. His residence, Anand Bhawan, served as the headquarters for INC, and he also joined the Civil Disobedience Movement. He participated in the Dandi March and was imprisoned. In 1931, soon after his release, Nehru passed away due to ill health.
