Apple is gearing up to drop a budget-friendly MacBook (codenamed J700) in the first half of 2026, aiming it at students, businesses, and anyone looking for a more affordable option.
The move signals Apple's push to reach beyond just high-end buyers and compete with Chromebooks and entry-level Windows laptops.

Apple will use an iPhone chip

To keep the price under $1,000, Apple will use an iPhone chip and a basic LCD display—the smallest screen in any Mac so far.
Interestingly, early tests show this chip actually outperforms the older M1.
For schools especially, this could be a game-changer—offering better battery life and flexibility than entry-level iPad setups for those who prefer a classic laptop feel.
