AWS outage leaves users stuck in uncomfortably hot smart beds
Technology
On October 20, 2025, a big AWS cloud outage knocked out Eight Sleep's pricey smart beds, which need the internet to work.
Suddenly, users couldn't control their beds—or stop them from overheating—leaving some stuck in uncomfortably hot or awkward positions.
Users couldn't adjust settings
Because these beds rely on AWS for things like temperature and position settings, users couldn't adjust settings either through the app or locally.
Some people had to unplug their $2,000+ beds just to get back a little comfort—definitely not what you expect from "smart" gear.
'Outage mode' coming soon
Eight Sleep says they're working on an "outage mode" that'll let you use basic features over Bluetooth if the internet goes down again.
The goal? Make sure your bed stays usable—even when the cloud isn't.
