China completes Changying-8 test flight of world's heaviest cargo drone
Technology
China has pulled off a successful test flight of the Changying-8, now the world's heaviest cargo drone.
Built by Norinco, this massive drone is meant for both military and civilian jobs.
Its first flight showed off some impressive features, like being able to take off and land on short runways, even at high altitudes.
Changying-8 specs and production prospects
The Changying-8 has a 7-tonne takeoff weight and stretches 17 meters long with a 25-meter wingspan.
It can haul loads in its roomy cargo bay that opens from both ends for fast loading.
Twin turboprop engines let it handle rough or basic runways easily.
Production could start later this year after more tests, but competition is heating up: private Chinese company Air White Whale is also developing the W5000 cargo drone.
