Chinese Academy of Sciences finds 2 tears in Arabian Plate
Scientists just found two huge "tears" in the Arabian Plate deep beneath southeastern Iran.
These rifts, spotted by a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, show how oceanic rock is pushed under continental rock, which resists, causing the plate to rip apart.
This helps us understand what happens when continents and oceans collide far below our feet.
Researchers confirm tears at Zagros Makran
Using data from 69 seismic stations, researchers confirmed a horizontal tear at the Zagros-Makran boundary and a vertical one near the Makran Trench.
These unusual cracks could even spark volcanic activity as magma rushes into the gaps.
The discovery gives us a rare look at how Earth's plates interact and shape our planet's history (pretty wild for anyone curious about what's going on underneath us!)
