Elon Musk's xAI launches anime-style virtual friend, Ani

Technology

Elon Musk's xAI just dropped Ani, a virtual friend for the Grok chatbot.
Ani is a 3D anime-style character inspired by Death Note's Misa Amane, and she chats with you using voice and reacts with cute animations based on how much you interact.
She was announced in mid-July 2025 and is available only on iOS—while basic features are free, premium features (including NSFW mode) require a $30/month SuperGrok subscription.

How to interact with Ani

Ani tracks your interactions through an "affection score," unlocking more expressive reactions like blushing or dancing as you connect.
Adults (18+) can access an NSFW mode with explicit dialogue and visuals, but that's behind a paywall.
You can try basic features for free by enabling Companion Mode in the Grok app.

Is Ani a good fit for you?

With her anime-inspired look, emotional memory, and voice chat, Ani stands out from typical AI bots.
But since she's mobile-only, has adult content options, and requires a subscription for full access, she's mainly aimed at adults looking for a more immersive (and sometimes spicy) virtual companion experience.
