What's the story

Google has unveiled the latest version of its security app, Google Authenticator 7.0, on Android. The update introduces a Material You redesign and several innovative features. This release comes more than a year after the previous update in April 2023, which brought a fresh icon and Google Account sync to users. The redesign is gradually rolling out to Google Authenticator users.

Redesign details

Redesign and search feature

The Material 3 redesign in Google Authenticator 7.0 is simple and includes a search function for accounts. This feature, new to Android, was already available on iOS last year. The search function is incorporated into a pill-shaped bar at the top of the screen, that also contains the account switcher and hamburger button.

Interface updates

Navigation drawer and user interface changes

The navigation drawer in the new design, marked by curved corners, includes the Transfer codes tool and a How it works guide, along with Settings and Help & feedback options. Various screens have been updated in this release, with the floating action button (FAB) transitioning from a circular shape to a rounded square. The four-color plus sign remains unchanged.

Scanning improvements

QR code scanning interface revamped

The "Scan a QR code" user interface has been revamped in Google Authenticator 7.0. A flash option has been added in the top-right corner, and it is now clarified that this feature is powered by Google Play Services. The app ensures users that "No image data will be shared, only the scan results." It further states that scanning is performed on your device, and Google will not save any image data or scanned codes.

Security upgrades

New app shortcut and privacy enhancements

Google Authenticator 7.0 introduces an app shortcut for quickly saving a new account. In terms of privacy enhancements, users can now enable a new Privacy screen in Settings. This feature restricts access to the app by your screen lock, biometric, or PIN. Users can set the "Require unlock after app is invisible" increment to: Immediately, After 10 seconds, After 1 minute, or After 10 minutes.
