IMD's weather forecasts have become much more accurate in recent years
Technology
India has seriously leveled up its severe weather forecasting over the past decade—accuracy for one- to five-day forecasts is up by 30-40%.
According to the IMD's Annual Climate Statement, coastal Karnataka one-day forecast accuracy rose from 80% in 2021 to 92% in 2025, while false alarms dropped too.
Regional forecasts, like in Karnataka and coastal areas, have seen big gains as well.
Better predictions mean better preparedness
Better weather predictions mean people can plan ahead and stay safer during storms or heavy rains.
Improved monsoon and extreme rainfall forecasts help farmers protect crops and let everyone prepare for wild weather.
Still, there's more work to do—but the progress is real.
