What's the story

South African cricketer Aiden Markram has made history by taking five catches in an innings of Test cricket. The Proteas relied on his sharp catches during the first innings of the ongoing 2nd Test against India at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. With this achievement, he joins an elite list of players that includes only one other South African player - Graeme Smith.

Record

Markram's historic feat in Test cricket

Markram's five catches came off the bowling of Marco Jansen and two spinners. He grabbed the catches of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav. Notably, the running catch of Reddy behind the stumps showcased Markram's exceptional fielding skills. He took a diving catch to the right of second slip as Reddy mistimed a Jansen delivery.

According to Cricbuzz, this was the 17th instance of a player grabbing five catches (outfield) in a Test innings. As mentioned, Graeme Smith remains the only other Proteas player with this feat. The most recent player to achieve this feat before Markram was Sri Lanka's Dhananjaya de Silva, who did so in 2024 against New Zealand. According to ESPNcricinfo, Australia's Steve Smith is the only player to have achieved this feat more than once.
