World Cup: How can Argentina qualify for the next round?

    What's the story

Argentina's 0-3 loss against Croatia, in FIFA World Cup 2018, makes them face a possibility of being knocked out from the group stage itself.

Messi's side looked dodgy as Sampaoli's team selection was questionable.

After a draw against Iceland in their opener, this loss could now have a significant bearing on their qualification hopes.

Here's how Argentina can still qualify for the knock-out stage.

    Scenario

A win for Argentina against Nigeria doesn't ensure promotion

Argentina are third in Group D after having played two matches.

Croatia sit atop of the standings with six points and have qualified for the round of 16.

They have a game to spare and face Iceland in their final encounter.

Argentina are up against Nigeria in their final group game and they need nothing but a win.

    But that doesn't guarantee promotion.

    Situation

Iceland could get through at the expense of Argentina

Sampaoli's men aren't in control of their own destiny.

Iceland face Nigeria next and if the European side clinch a win, then they will have four points from two matches.

A draw against Croatia in their final game will be enough to see them through as runners-up.

It means Argentina will bow out even if they manage to beat Nigeria.

    Maths

    What does Argentina need?

Sampaoli's men need Nigeria to either beat Iceland or even draw the game.

Argentina need to beat Nigeria to get to 4 points.

It would then make Iceland's last group match interesting.

If Croatia win or earn a draw, then Argentina will go through.

If Iceland win one and lose one, they too will be on 4 points meaning goal-difference will come into play.
