The path to the national team has never been easy for the Husseys. Like his older brother Michael Hussey, former Australian cricketer David Hussey, too, had to score a lot of runs in domestic competitions in both Australia and England before making his international debut. An aggressive batsman by nature, he first caught national attention when he scored almost a run-a-ball double-century for Victoria in his first full first-class season. Hussey's first 1,000-run first-class season led to him being called for national team duty for a 2008 ODI series against the West Indies. A run-machine for both Victoria and Nottinghamshire, Hussey never really got it going for him in the international cricket. A utility off-break bowler as well, Hussey only represented Australia in limited-overs cricket. Despite having a first-class average of 52.50, he never got a chance to wear the famed baggy green cap. With over 14,000 first-class runs under his belt, it is surprising that Hussey was as effective in the shortest format of the game. He was one of the most sought-after players by T20 franchises across the world. As of 2021, he is the coach of the BBL franchise Melbourne Stars.
