Tenacious and unrelenting—these are the two words that describe English cricketer Jonny Bairstow the best. From losing his father, who was also a cricketer at the age of eight, to playing the same sport and honing himself to be one of the best in the game, Bairstow never took the easy way out. He broke into the scene after winning the inaugural Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year award for the 2007 season. His first-class debut came in 2009 for Yorkshire, and on his debut, he scored 82 runs in the second innings. Bairstow made his international debut in an ODI in 2011 against India. His Test debut came in 2012 against the West Indies. A wicketkeeper-batsman, Bairstow was criticized constantly in the earlier stages of his career for his wicketkeeping techniques, while many touted him to be a specialist batsman for the future. However, his unwavering determination to improve his game saw him becoming a better wicketkeeper and batsman. Bairstow set the record for the wicketkeeper with the most runs in a calendar year in 2016. He made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2019 for Sunrisers Hyderabad and scored 445 runs in his debut season.
