What's the story

To prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Lucknow Super Giants are sending their domestic bowlers to South Africa. According to a Cricbuzz report, the players will train with Durban Super Giants, LSG's South African affiliate, during the SA20 tournament. The initiative comes as part of LSG's strategy to ensure their players are well-prepared and fit for the IPL season, starting in March.

Training details

Bowlers to hone skills during SA20

The SA20 tournament will run for a month, beginning December 26. LSG's domestic bowlers, including Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan, are on the initial shortlist for this training stint. The franchise has also sought permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to avoid any protocol breach. Notably, none of these players are contracted with the board or are currently attached to their state sides.

Recovery focus

Training aims to aid recovery and readiness

The training stint in Durban is particularly aimed at helping Avesh and Mohsin, who have been perturbed by injuries. The impending stint is aimed at starting their recovery routines. The franchise hopes this will prepare them for the IPL season. Avesh, the Madhya Pradesh right-arm seamer, has not played since IPL 2025. Meanwhile, left-arm pacer Mohsin from Uttar Pradesh hasn't even played this year.

The Super Giants also bought seamer Anrich Nortje and spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for ₹2 crore each. Led by Rishabh Pant, LSG finished seventh in IPL 2025, winning six of their 14 games. They would hope to make the playoffs next year.
