Born on April 17, 1972, Deshabandu Muthiah Muralidaran is a former Sri Lankan cricketer, known for his off-spin bowling style. Regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history, Muralitharan holds the record of taking the maximum wickets in international cricket, as of 2021. Muralitharan began his Test cricket journey in 1992 against Australia. Between 1992 and 2010, he played 133 Test matches and took 800 wickets, thus becoming the record holder of taking maximum wickets in Test cricket as of 2021. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 1993 against India. Between 1993 and 2011, Muralitharan played 350 ODI matches and took a record 534 wickets. He made his T20 International debut in 2006 against New Zealand. He also holds the records for taking the maximum 5-wicket hauls in an innings in Test cricket, and 10-wicket hauls in a Test match and bowling the maximum balls in international cricket, as of 2021. He is the first player to take a 10-wicket haul per match against every Test-playing country. He holds the record of having been conferred with the maximum Man of the Series Awards in Test cricket. He retired from international cricket in 2011. He has also been associated with Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. Since 2015, he has been the bowling coach for the IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is also inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
