Former Pakistan cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter's decision brings an end to a nearly two-decade-long career that included some of the most memorable moments in Pakistan's white-ball history. Sarfaraz made his international debut in November 2007 against India at Jaipur and went on to play 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is during his career. He scored a total of 6,164 runs with six centuries and 35 half-centuries.

Most successful captain of Pakistan in white-ball cricket

Sarfaraz captained Pakistan in 100 international matches across formats, including 50 ODIs, 37 T20Is, and 13 Tests. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the No.1 spot in T20I cricket and achieved a world-record streak of 11 consecutive T20I series wins. His captaincy is best remembered for leading Pakistan to victory at the 2017 Champions Trophy in England where they defeated India by a whopping margin of 180 runs.

Supported several young cricketers during his career

Sarfaraz also played a key role in supporting several young cricketers at the start of their international careers. This list includes Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan. Sarfaraz last played for Pakistan in December 2023

Sarfaraz's appearances in international cricket reduced with the rise of Mohammad Rizwan. His last appearance for Pakistan was in a Test match against Australia in Perth back in December 2023. Now, he is expected to take over as a coach with the national team after Pakistan's recent Super Eight exit from T20 World Cup 2026.
