Lukaku's goal-scoring spree at Inter helps him equal Ronaldo's record
Romelu Lukaku seems to be enjoying the form of his life. His brace allowed Inter Milan to script a memorable 2-1 comeback win over Bologna in Serie A on Saturday. After this win, Inter sit on the second spot of the Serie A table, one point behind league leaders, Juventus. Meanwhile Lukaku scripted a special record, equalling Brazilian legend Ronaldo.
How did the match pan out?
It was an action-packed match, with chances aplenty for both sides in the opening half, but they went into the half-time goalless. While Bologna led in the 59th minute, courtesy Roberto Soriano's strike, Lukaku pulled one back in the 75th minute. Inter were awarded a penalty in the 91st minute as Lukaku made no mistake to convert it to hand them a win.
Lukaku first to score nine in opening 11, since Ronaldo
By scoring against Bologna, Lukaku became the first player to score nine or more goals in the opening 11 games of Serie A, since Ronaldo achieved it during the 1997-98 season. Ronaldo's tally during the season read 25 goals in Serie A, along with 34 goals across competitions. Lukaku, so far, has scored nine goals in the league.
Ronaldo had a great stint at Inter
As for Ronaldo at the club, he had a great five-year-tenure at the club. In 99 matches across competitions, he scored 59 goals, while his opening season at the club was the best one. He missed out on the entire 2000-01 season due to recurring injuries. He also managed to win silverware, in the form of the UEFA Cup, in 1997-98.
Lukaku signed a five-year deal with Inter in August
In August this year, Lukaku had penned a five-year deal with the club for €80 million, which would keep him at San Siro until 2024. Manager Antonio Conte had immediately identified him as his target after joining the club this season. However, the negotiations went on for too long as both Manchester United and Inter were unable to reach an agreement.
Lukaku had an average stint at United
Lukaku, who played at United for a couple of seasons, endured a tough time in the second season. However, he still managed to have a decent stint at Old Trafford, scoring 42 goals in 96 matches. While he failed to win a silverware at the club, his aura was well-lived, as he moved to Inter with the aim to perform better and win titles.
Inter were the only club I wanted: Lukaku
"Inter were the only club I wanted because Inter is Not For Everyone. I'm here to bring the Nerazzurri back to the top," Lukaku was quoted as saying, via a press release from Inter, following his move.
