What's the story

Shreyas Iyer was instrumental to India's four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final. His vital knock of 48 runs contributed significantly to India's successful chase of the 252-run target in Dubai. With this, the Men in Blue clinched their third Champions Trophy title. Meanwhile, Iyer finished the tournament as India's top scorer and the second-highest run-getter overall. Here we look at the records he scripted.

Campaign

Iyer only behind Ravindra

Iyer was in sublime form throughout the tourney as his scores read 15, 56, 79, 49, and 48. The batter hence finished the campaign with 243 runs across five games at 48.60. His strike rate (79.41) was on the lower side as all of India's matches were played in Dubai, where not a single game witnessed a 270-plus score. Meanwhile, Iyer was only behind NZ's Rachin Ravindra in terms of runs. The latter finished with 263 runs.

Record

Iyer scripts this massive record

As per ESPNcricinfo, Iyer's tally of 243 runs is now the best by a player operating at number four or lower in a Champions Trophy edition. He narrowly went past Australia's Damien Martyn, who made 241 runs in the 2006 edition. England's Joe Root, who made 225 runs in CT 2025, is the only other middle-order batter with 210-plus runs in this regard. Overall, Iyer aggregated the fifth-most runs by a non-opener in a CT edition.

Stats

Here are Iyer's ODI numbers

Iyer has been in sublime form since returning to ODIs. He recorded scores of 78, 44, and 59 in the England ODI series just before the Champions Trophy. In 70 ODIs, the Indian batter has now raced to 2,845 runs. He has an average of 48.22 in the format (SR: 100). He has five tons besides 22 fifties to his name in the format.

Opposition

His exploits against NZ

Iyer once again showed why he fancies facing the Black Caps in ODI cricket. Before the 48 in the final, he scored 79 against them in the league stage. The middle-order batter now has 611 runs from 10 ODIs against them at an incredible average of 67.88. His ODI scores against this opposition read 103, 52, 62, 80, 49, 33, 105, 79, and 48.

He became the first middle-order batter to surpass 500 runs in a single WC edition. With his heroics in CT 2025, Iyer has raced to 773 runs across 16 games in ICC ODI events at 59.46. India's Champions Trophy victory reaffirms dominance in high-pressure tournaments

Meanwhile, India's latest Champions Trophy win not only seals their third title but also reestablishes their dominance in high-pressure tournaments. The victory comes just 10 months after their T20 World Cup win last June, making it India's second ICC trophy in a year time. Notably, India were unbeaten in both these campaigns. The jam-packed Dubai stadium, filled with Indian fans, witnessed a moment of redemption after the heartbreak of the 2023 ODI World Cup final on home soil.
