Shubman Gill equals this elite Test record of Virat Kohli
What's the story
Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has scored his first Test century at home while leading the side. The milestone came on Day 2 of the second Test match against West Indies in Delhi. Gill scored an unbeaten 196-ball 129 as India declared at 518/5 while batting first. This is also his fifth hundred as captain and 10th overall in Tests for India.
Record equalized
Gill joins an elite list of players
With this century, Gill became just the second Indian skipper to hammer five Test tons in a calendar year. He has joined the legendary Virat Kohli, who smashed five tons apiece in 2017 and 2018. Since taking over as captain, Gill has been on a run-scoring spree. He racked up an impressive 754 runs at an average of 75.40 in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, his maiden leadership assignment in Tests. He smoked four hundreds in the series.
Stellar year
Stellar form in 2025 for Gill
Gill's performance in 2025 has been stellar, amassing 966 runs in just 14 innings, averaging 74.30. He has maintained a strike rate of 62.29 as five of his six 50-plus scores have been converted into tons. During his stay, Gill also became India's highest run-getter in WTC history. Playing his 39th match, he has raced to 2,826 runs at 43.47 (100s: 10, 50s: 8). Rishabh Pant (2,731) and Rohit (2,716) now trail Gill in terms of WTC runs.
Century count
Dominance of Indian batsmen in recent Tests against West Indies
The recent Test series between India and West Indies has seen a flurry of centuries. In the last 14 Tests since 2013, there have been 25 tons scored, with Indian batsmen accounting for a whopping 23 of them. The only West Indian to score a century during this period is Roston Chase, who has done so twice. This clearly shows India's batting prowess over their Caribbean counterparts.
