Impeached president Santiago Pena faces prosecutors over Ueno Bank collapse
Santiago Pena, who was just impeached as Paraguay's president, appeared before prosecutors Saturday morning over the collapse of Ueno Bank: a digital bank he partly owned that left millions of Paraguayans in trouble.
He's facing charges of malfeasance in office and prosecutors accused him of a breach of trust.
While he insists he did nothing wrong, Pena admitted, "I want to apologize to the Paraguayan people if I have failed you," and apologized publicly.
Paraguayans locked out of Ueno accounts
Ueno Bank's being seized for failing solvency standards set off protests across Asuncion and left millions of Paraguayans without access to their money.
Even though Pena tried to resign, lawmakers still voted to remove him.
Now President Pedro Alliana is in charge until August 2028, promising to help people hurt by the bank fiasco and fix the financial mess.
This is Paraguay's first presidential impeachment since 2012, a sign of just how serious things have gotten.
