Israel's Isaac Herzog taps Gadi Eisenkot to challenge Benjamin Netanyahu
Israel's president, Isaac Herzog, has picked Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party and a former army chief, to try to form the next government.
The October 27 election didn't give any party a clear win, so Eisenkot now has 28 days and support from 67 lawmakers to pull together a coalition that could finally unseat longtime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Gadi Eisenkot faces Arab party tensions
Eisenkot faces a tricky puzzle: he needs to unite groups like the Change Bloc and Arab parties, but some Arab factions want to help without officially joining in. That's causing some tension within his camp.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu is warning against deals with Arab-led parties, making things even more complicated.
If Eisenkot can't get it done in time, he might get two more weeks, so it's going to be an intense few weeks for Israeli politics.
