Nithya Raman set to become L.A. mayor amid homelessness crisis
Nithya Raman, who grew up in India and later moved to the US is set to become L.A.'s new mayor.
She's stepping in at a tough time, with L.A. facing a big homelessness crisis, high housing costs, and public safety concerns: issues she's made her top priorities from day one.
Her win comes as City Hall deals with political divisions and aging infrastructure.
Nithya Raman joins city democratic socialists
Raman adds to the growing group of democratic socialists in city government, joining names like Zohran Mamdani in New York.
Even after pushback from the police union, she stuck to local issues that matter most to Angelenos.
Educated at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and founding a homelessness outreach nonprofit in LA, she says she'll always put the city first, even if it means a break from the Democratic Socialists of America when she believes their agenda conflicts with interests of the city.
She takes office mid-December, aiming to get L.A. ready for big moments like the 2028 Olympics.
