Russia knocks out power in 5 Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv
Last night, Russian attacks knocked out power in five Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, just as the country heads into a tough winter.
The strikes severely disrupted electricity, water and heating supplies in Kyiv, leaving many people struggling.
At least two people lost their lives and about 12 were hurt, according to Ukrainian officials.
President Zelenskiy pointed out that key facilities for Kyiv and central Ukraine were hit, making the energy shortage even worse.
Ukraine downed 4 missiles, most drones
The regions affected (Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, and Kyiv) faced major blackouts.
Russia says it was targeting military factories and transport routes; big hits included a power plant in the Kyiv region and the Meridian plant.
Ukraine's air defenses managed to stop some of the attack but couldn't catch everything: only four out of 36 missiles were shot down along with most drones.
On top of this, recent strikes on bridges in Kyiv have made getting around even harder for locals.
All this is happening just before new trilateral talks involving Ukrainian and Russian officials, as part of a US-backed peace initiative.
