Trump willing to talk to Kim Jong-un over phone

US President Donald Trump has said the he would "absolutely" be willing to speak to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over the phone and that he hopes that something positive comes out of the talks between North Korea and South Korea next week. On Friday, North Korea agreed to hold talks with South Korea, something which Trump said resulted from his steady pressure.

Trump says he's open to talks

When asked whether he would be willing to talk to Kim Jong-un over the phone, Trump said, "Absolutely, I would do that. I have no problem with that at all".

Trump and Kim had been exchanging insults for a while

Ever since Trump took office, the North Korean leader and Trump have exchanged insults, with Trump repeatedly calling Kim "rocket man" for testing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. Earlier this week, Trump replied to Kim's taunt about having a nuclear button by saying that he had a bigger button on his desk.

    Trump hopeful about the talks

"If something can come out of those talks, that would be a great thing for all of humanity, that would be a great thing for the world," said Trump.

North Korea-South Korea talks to cover Winter Olympics

The talks between North Korea and South Korea are expected to cover inter-Korean relations and the Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea next month. Both countries have confirmed five representatives each. The North Korean delegation will be headed by Ri Son Gwon, head of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.

    Trump takes credit for talks

"Look, right now they're [North Korea] talking Olympics. It's a start, it's big start. If I weren't involved they wouldn't be talking at all right now," added Trump.
