US measles cases exceed 5,000 this year, jeopardizing measles-free status
Measles cases in the US have shot up to over 5,000 this year, the highest since 1991.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says outbreaks are hitting 45 states and are mostly due to fewer people getting vaccinated, which has weakened community protection.
Now, there's a real risk the US could lose its measles-free status.
Pennsylvania records 1,467 cases, federal $100 million
Pennsylvania's been hit hardest, reporting 1,467 cases since April.
The state has ramped up MMR vaccinations, especially in Amish and Mennonite areas, giving out more than 100,000 doses lately.
Sadly, New York and Wisconsin saw their first measles-related deaths in decades.
In response, federal officials are sending $100 million to help states ramp up vaccines and track cases while the Pan American Health Organization reviews whether the US can keep its measles-free label.
