BYD plans India-focused EV model as it ramps overseas expansion
What's the story
World's largest electric vehicle (EV) maker, China's BYD, is working on a new model specifically for the Indian market. The company's Executive Vice President Stella Li confirmed this development at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. She said that engineers at BYD's Shenzhen headquarters are currently working on the design of this new model, although an official launch date is yet to be announced. "India is a market for us but we need to put more effort," said Li.
Expansion plans
BYD aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles overseas this year
Despite a dip in domestic sales due to changes in government subsidies for electric vehicles, BYD is targeting at least 24% growth overseas this year. This translates to around 1.3 million vehicles, including hybrids. The company is focusing on all markets except the US where Chinese imports face heavy tariffs.
Safety measures
BYD will also introduce mechanical door handles in overseas models
Acknowledging signs of slowing growth in Europe, where hybrids overtook petrol-only cars last year, Li said demand would be driven by upcoming launches. She described the new longer-range hybrids as aimed at buyers "who don't trust EVs," calling them a potential game-changer. Li also said BYD will switch to mechanical door handles on its overseas models after China banned hidden handles over safety concerns.
