What's the story

Genesis, the luxury brand under Hyundai, has launched its first-ever hybrid vehicle, the GV80 Hybrid. The new model is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter petrol engine and a next-generation hybrid system developed by the wider Hyundai group. It also comes with a liquid-cooled battery for better temperature management and improved efficiency.

Engine details

Hybrid system includes a starter-generator motor and a drive motor

The GV80 Hybrid's powertrain includes a starter-generator motor and a drive motor.

The starter-generator motor starts the engine and generates power, while the drive motor handles propulsion and regenerative braking.

This unique setup replaces the conventional reverse gear to reduce complexity.

Internal testing has shown that this configuration improves fuel efficiency by 25% over its gas-only counterpart.

Power boost

Power output has been increased by nearly 16%

The Genesis GV80 Hybrid's power output has been increased by nearly 16%, from 300hp to 347hp.

The torque has also seen a significant jump of around 26%, going from 422Nm to an impressive 530Nm.

These improvements help the new hybrid model go from zero to 100km/h in just 7.1 seconds.

Feature highlights

It gets Stay Mode to keep the climate system running

The GV80 Hybrid also comes with a Stay Mode that keeps the climate system running even when the combustion engine is off, using energy from the battery.

It uses navigation data, speed-camera information, and distance to vehicles ahead for efficient regenerative braking.

The new model also gets a smoother-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission and several hardware tweaks to reduce engine noise.

Market entry

GV80 Hybrid will be available in the US

The GV80 Hybrid will be available in the United States, although it will likely be priced higher than its non-electrified sibling.

The new model is expected to offer a blend of refinement and long-distance convenience of a petrol-powered luxury SUV with improved fuel efficiency.

This makes it an attractive addition to Genesis's lineup for customers looking for a more eco-friendly option without compromising on luxury or performance.
