India to introduce 5-star energy-efficiency ratings for electric 2-wheelers
Auto
India plans to introduce a new star-rating system to make it easier for you to spot energy-efficient electric two-wheelers (e2Ws).
Using the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's five-star scale as a model, this will show which bikes use less electricity, so higher stars mean more savings and greener rides.
India's voluntary rating could become mandatory
The plan is starting off as voluntary, but could become mandatory later.
With India now the world's second-biggest e2W market (1.4 million sold in FY26 (FY 2025-26), up 20% from FY25 (the previous financial year)), this move aims to boost trust in EVs and encourage smarter choices.
Experts say it's a solid step toward cleaner mobility, though they note things like real-world performance and cost savings might still be tricky.
