New bill could limit where Tesla's self-driving can go
A new bill called the Stay in Your Lane Act, introduced by Senator Ed Markey on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, might force Tesla to restrict its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system.
The law would require carmakers to clearly define where their advanced driving tech is safe to use—and actually keep it within those limits.
For Tesla drivers, this could mean FSD won't work everywhere it does today.
Why does it matter?
If this passes, automakers like Tesla would have to play by stricter rules and face real penalties if they overpromise what their systems can do.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would get more power to investigate or fine companies that stretch the boundaries.
For anyone excited about self-driving cars, this could change how—and where—you get to use them in the future.
