What's the story

Toyota has unveiled its latest concept vehicle, the Tacoma H2-Overlander, at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The innovative truck is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCE) and battery electric (BE) powertrain. It boasts an impressive 547hp output from two electric motors and emits only water as tailpipe emissions. The concept was developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) engineering teams in California and North Carolina.

Off-road capabilities

The truck can power an entire home off-grid

The Tacoma H2-Overlander is a game-changer for off-road enthusiasts. It comes with a 15kW power takeoff that can power an entire home off-grid or charge two EVs at once via dual NEMA 14-50 outlets. This way, even those driving battery electric-powered off-roaders won't have to worry about running out of juice in the middle of their adventures.

Tech features

It has a 2nd-generation Toyota Mirai fuel cell stack

The Tacoma H2-Overlander features a second-generation Toyota Mirai fuel cell stack and three hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of 6kg. These fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity and water vapor. The powertrain is supplemented by a 24.9kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers a 225kW front motor and an eAxle with an output of up to 188kW.

Performance

The vehicle features a TRD exhaust water recovery system

The electrified powertrain of the Tacoma H2-Overlander offers instant torque and regenerative capabilities, making it a true all-wheel-drive overlanding machine. It has a TRD billet long-travel kit with heavy-duty Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks for better articulation and shock absorption over rough terrain. The vehicle also gets a patent-pending TRD exhaust water recovery system which captures and filters one of the only byproducts of the hydrogen fuel cell stack, water, for camping and outdoor use.

Making

The project wasn't easy

The Tacoma H2-Overlander concept is a testament to Toyota's commitment to carbon neutrality. However, the project wasn't easy. Transforming a petrol-powered Tacoma into a hydrogen fuel cell 4WD concept required fitting a new powertrain into a vehicle never designed for it, all within just a few months. TRD engineers used advanced CAD modeling, 3D-printed guides and multi-site collaboration efforts to meet this challenge.
