Uber to launch premium robotaxi service in Houston by mid-2027
Uber just announced it's bringing a premium robotaxi service to Houston by mid-2027, right after its first launch in San Francisco later this year.
This is all part of Uber's team-up with Lucid and self-driving startup Nuro, and it puts them head-to-head with Waymo in the race for driverless rides.
Uber testing Nuro powered Lucid SUVs
Uber isn't stopping at just two cities: they want to roll out these robotaxis across dozens of US cities.
Right now, they're testing Lucid Gravity SUVs powered by Nuro's autonomous tech (with safety drivers on board) in both Houston and San Francisco.
To make this happen, Uber has made about $500 million in direct investments in Nuro and committed to invest $500 million in Lucid, built a massive charging depot in Houston, and is getting ready for fully driverless cars as soon as the tech gets the green light.
